M4 eastbound to the M25, round to the M20 and the Eurotunnel shuttle from Folkestone. Portugal is a long haul and the shuttle keeps the vehicle sealed and the driver's hours intact for the run ahead.
South through France on the A26, A10 and A63 to the border at Irún, then across northern Spain. For Porto and the north it is the A-52 and A-55 through Vigo. For Lisbon and the Algarve the route runs south through Salamanca and crosses at Vilar Formoso, or further south via Badajoz towards the A6 and Lisbon, then the A2 down to the Algarve.

The certificate of baggage is the document people most often leave too late, and it is the one that stops a load. Start it as soon as you have a NIF.
On furniture: Portuguese properties, especially older ones in the Algarve and the Alentejo, have thick walls, small windows and doors that were not designed around modern sofas. Measure the destination doorways at the viewing. We would far rather tell you a piece will not go in before it crosses Europe than after.
